This project translated a song into a visual composition. The assigned piece was Steve Reich’s “Piano Phase”. Reich initially recorded a piano part on tape and then attempted to perform in synchrony with it, introducing slight shifts and variations. The piece was later structured for two pianos. For the visual interpretation, I drew inspiration from Escher’s Metamorphosis to convey the essence of the phasing technique used in Piano Phase. The entire visualisation is built from a grid of black and white pixels, creating a direct connection with the piano and its rhythmic and timbral duality.
After building the compositions in Illustrator, I assembled them in After Effects and made them flow together into a continuous animation. To increase the sense of movement, I rotated the panels around themselves, creating greater dynamism, depth and a double direction of motion.
